    Holy spirit
    closes on:  04/09/2010  |  due:  04/12/2010  |  open to:  Level 3
Vancouverites are abandoning churches and temples faster than any other city in Canada -- by 2031, almost a third of us will be theologically uncommitted. Approach two houses of worship of different faiths (old, grand temples and the like are preferred for their visual interest) plus the B.C. Humanist Association. Get their preachers' views on the repercussions of the anti-religious trend.
    Earth Hour
    closes on:  03/27/2010  |  due:  03/29/2010  |  open to:  Level 3
Earth Hour will, once again, have (some) people turning out their lights for the World Wildlife Fund's climate change awareness program. This Earth Hour, be at the go-to place in your city when the lights go out. Speak with people in the dark about why they care about sustainability. Take shots of key landmarks around town that have gone dark. When the lights come back on, film them again to get the contrast.
    Quakeproof
    closes on:  04/09/2010  |  due:  04/12/2010  |  open to:  Level 3
Damage from recent tremors in Haiti and Chile is reminding Vancouverites they live on a major fault. What would a magnitude-eight quake do to the city? Go with an architectural engineer to a building with poor prospects and another that's sure to stay standing and have him point out the reasons why.
    Surviving an avalanche
    closes on:  04/09/2010  |  due:  03/15/2010  |  open to:  Level 1
B.C. is in the middle of avalanche season. This time every year, it's important for skiers, snowboarders and hikers to know how to avoid the deadly snow slides -- and what to do if they're in harm's way. Meet with a representative from the Canadian Avalanche Centre about deterring and survivng avalanches. If possible, conduct the interview on a snowy mountain and have the representative demonstrate what to do.

    closes on:  04/09/2010  |  due:  04/12/2010  |  open to:  Level 1
Vancouverites are embracing the physiological benefits of laughter at the weekly Laughter Club at Et Cetera. Attend the Laughter Yoga seminar, speaking with the instructor and participants. Film people going through chuckle exercises. Try to get at the benefits of a belly laugh.
    Doggy Showcase
    closes on:  04/02/2010  |  due:  04/05/2010  |  open to:  Level 1
Homeless dogs are available for adoption at the weekly Vancouver Animal Shelter Doggy Showcase at the Dog and Hydrant. Arrange to speak with a representative from the animal shelter about their supply of homeless pets. When at the location, try to get the story behind a specific pup, and film the new parents (if any) as they adopt the animal.
    Avatar copyright accusation
    closes on:  04/09/2010  |  due:  04/12/2010  |  open to:  Level 2
James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment ripped off a 2002 script plus artwork, the older work's writer alleges. The Vancouver restaurant owner is taking the studio to court. Show Emil Malak's Terra Incognita and compare it with Avatar. Let the viewer decide whether there are any similarities.

The Russians were criticized by their government recently for not performing well -- well, pressure to reach gold is common to all Olympians. With the world watching and agonizing over every inch of athletes' performances, how do they handle the pressure? Speak with a sports psychologist at a busy community rec center about the very human problem that appeals to all of us: how to cope under intense pressure.

  • Story Guidelines

YOU are the best judge of what makes a great local story. These stories are FOR you, BY you. Go through the checklist below before submitting a story idea:
    Must Be Visual
A story may seem great on paper, but will it translate on camera? The story needs to have visual potential.
    Must Be Authentic
We want grass-roots stories that matter in your city, stories that engage viewers and inspire them to react. Examples include; politics, local environmental or social issues, arts and culture, sports, pop phenomena... it's all fair game if it affects your community and makes a compelling story.
    Must Have Viral Potential
We want to see your BBN3 Network video to have lots of eyeballs on it. In order for bloggers to want to embed your video and write about it, it needs to matter to a large chunk of our demographic - 18-34 year olds and be buzz worthy. Is the topic and story on people's minds? Are people blogging about it?
