The vibrant sea of plaid kilts and the unwavering sounds of the bagpipe was a call to once again gather for the Scottish Highland Games. The Caledonian Club of San Francisco held their 143rd annual event, drawing an estimated fifty-thousand spectators to the Alameda County Fairgrounds over the Labor Day Weekend. San Francisco IAM talked to Scottish countrymen, descendants and enthusiasts alike, went to the frontlines of the infamous caber toss, engaged in the buzzing and frolicking, and indulged in the abundance of fine whiskey, meat pies, and even Haggis. And if you were like the many that happened to be Scottish, you were bound to reunite with one or more of the countless clans celebrating their lineage. San Francisco’s fashionistas and philanthropists gathered for yet another night of visual drama on the runway to change the lives of those living with HIV and AIDS. Here at the 2008 Macy’s Passport Show, SanFranciscoIAM.com got inside access to the two-night extravaganza of style and charity, experiencing first-hand how San Francisco’s ready-to-wear was ready to change lives. San Francisco hosted its first Redbull soapbox race this Saturday atop the Mission Districts Dolores St, hosting 33 different local and national teams. Not to be confused with the Youth Soapbox Derby, Redbull drew 60,000 spectators to Dolores Park to ooh and ahh and mingle with the outlandishly costumed members of each team, whose Soapboxes were anything but ordinary. There were the Treehuggers, the Rubix Cube, and even a Transamerica shaped car, but San FranciscoIAM.com was specifically invited to chronicle team 32, the Burrito Bomber. In San Francisco, almost 40% percent of its residents are born overseas and numerous cultural events celebrate these ethnic diversities. VJ Michael Montelban visits one festival to see how young people are connecting with their Filipino roots. An awaited feature at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival this year, Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg premiered at the Castro Theater tributing the Jewish-American broadcast icon, Gertrude Berg.
